As the month’s second heat dome settled over Cleveland in mid-July, I noticed a family hanging out along Kinsman Avenue, near East 55th Street. The roads are part of a five-point intersection where the constant rumble of heavy trucks, car horns and noise from nearby gas stations add to the irritability of drivers stuck at its long lights. The family of five positioned themselves along a sidewalk, offering cold drinks for $1 to passing drivers, including me. .“Ice cold. Pepsi for a buck. Ice cold,” shouted the mother, who accepts cash and phone payments through a cash app ($jrdastar08) “Water. Ice tea. Ice cold.” I returned the next day and introduced myself, asking if the family would mind talking to me about this side hustle in the intense heat.
