In Part 2 of our studio acoustics series, we explore one of the fundamental concepts in acoustics: the difference between Sound Pressure and Particle Velocity, and how these two parameters behave inside a room and near a boundary.
Understanding this relationship is essential for explaining why a single type of acoustic absorber cannot effectively control the entire frequency range.
We start by looking at how sound travels through air and the relationship between sound pressure and particle velocity, including their phase difference.
Then we examine Porous Absorbers, how they work, why their installation position matters, and how the distance from a boundary can affect their low-frequency absorption performance.
We also look at Pressure Absorbers and why this type of absorber behaves differently from porous materials.
Another important topic is the common use of the term “Bass Trap” in the acoustic treatment market. Not every foam panel or porous absorber marketed as a Bass Trap is necessarily capable of providing effective low-frequency absorption.
By understanding the relationship between Pressure, Particle Velocity, Porous Absorbers, and Pressure Absorbers, we can better understand why different absorber mechanisms are needed to control a wide range of frequencies in a studio.
