What Did Cassini Find in the Enceladus Ocean?

There is one ocean out there you never have to land on. Enceladus throws itself into space, and that is why a working spacecraft was deliberately destroyed.
In 2005, Cassini's magnetometer picked up something wrong near a small icy moon of Saturn. The magnetic field was bending where nothing should have been bending it. A flyby was redrawn, the altitude was dropped, and the spacecraft went straight through what turned out to be a plume of water vapor and ice, erupting from long fractures at the south pole. The moon is about five hundred kilometers across. It has been venting its own ocean into space the entire time we have been watching it.
Everything after that was measurement, made from the outside, by a machine that was never designed for this job: salts, silica, molecular hydrogen at four tenths to one point four percent of the plume, published in 2017, and phosphates found in the archive years after the spacecraft was gone. Hydrogen like that is fuel. On Earth there are organisms that live on exactly that, taking hydrogen and carbon dioxide and making methane, with no light and no us. None of this is a discovery of life. The decision to protect the moon had already been taken; what the hydrogen did was make it very hard to argue with, and it is why the machine that found the ocean could not be allowed to fall into it.
