Ten Songs, Thirty Days, the book that goes with this lesson (the ten-minute daily plan that takes older hands from a first chord to real songs, planned minute by minute for thirty days): https://ericsguitar.netlify.app/?b=2&... No more gaps. You strum a chord, the song is moving, and then the change comes: your fingers lift off, hunt for the next shape, and the song falls into a hole. That isn't slow fingers, and it isn't your age. Most chord charts show each chord standing alone and never show the trip between two chords. Here is one trick for chord changes, in four small steps, on the guitar you already own. THE ONE TRICK, IN FOUR STEPS 1. Lift them low: lift your fingers just enough for the strings to stop sounding, and keep each fingertip over its own string 2. Leave down what the next chord wants: C to A minor shares two fingers, so only the ring finger moves 3. Move the rest like one hand: A minor to E is the same shape one string over; C to G seven moves two fingers as a pair 4. Two fingers that never move: G, C add nine, D sus four and E minor seven, with the ring and little fingers resting on the third fret of the two thinnest strings the whole time (what Andy Guitar calls Oasis-style chords) Bonus for busy or stiff hands: strum the last beat on the thin open strings while your hand travels, so the song keeps its beat. Everything is described for a right-handed player. If you play left-handed, mirror it. A finger you leave down is resting, not pressing. C add nine and D sus four sound a little different from the plain C and D, and in a few songs the plain chord fits the melody better. THE BOOKS Gentle Chords ($27), Ten Songs, Thirty Days ($47), or The Complete Gentle Guitar Library, all three volumes ($97): https://ericsguitar.netlify.app/?b=2&... ERIC'S SUNDAY STRUM One easy song every Sunday, arranged for older hands (three chords or fewer, no barre), with a slow video, a large-print page and one gentle hand tip. 7 days free, then $9.90 a month. Cancel anytime. https://ericsguitar.netlify.app/club/ YOUR TURN Which step closed the most gaps for you? Write one word in the comments: low, down, together, or anchors. I read them. Next lesson: barre chords for older hands, pressing less, not more. A WORD OF CARE This video is for general education only. It is not medical advice. Some soreness in the fingertips during the first few weeks is normal. Pain in the joints, numbness, tingling, a finger that catches, or swelling is not: stop, and talk to your doctor or a hand therapist before you play again. If you use warmth for stiff hands, keep it warm, not hot, and skip heat on a recent injury or during a flare. Never force a finger into a stretch that hurts. Results vary from person to person.
