A few years ago, I built the Zvezda Mi 24V, but something about that build never quite felt right. I knew eventually I would have to build another Hind.
That opportunity came when I found Trumpeter's 1/48 Mi 24P Hind F at House of Hobbies in Burbank, CA. This time, I decided to build the Hind I had always wanted, an aircraft representative of the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the distinctive camouflage schemes seen on Soviet Hinds operating in Afghanistan.
In this video, I take you through the early stages of the build, including the cockpit, cargo bay, scratchbuilt interior details, wheel wells, fuselage assembly, and preparation for painting.
I also use the Quinta Studio 3D cockpit set, scratchbuild details that Trumpeter and Zvezda left out of the area between the cockpit and cargo bay, add troop lockers, an axe and mounting hardware, and tackle some of the smaller details that help bring the interior to life.
Along the way, I compare the Trumpeter kit with the older Monogram Mi 24 and the Zvezda Hind, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each kit, and share a few mistakes I made along the way.
This is only the beginning of the build. In the next video, we'll move into the exterior, painting, camouflage, weathering, and some of the more interesting details of this incredible helicopter.
Thanks for watching, and if you enjoy scale modeling, aircraft, helicopters, scratchbuilding and weathering, please consider liking the video, leaving a comment, and subscribing to Modeling Maestro.
