The Alternative for Germany has clinched an historic victory in a state election. Preliminary results show the AfD won almost 44 percent of the Sunday vote in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, which puts a far-right party within reach of power at the state level for the first time since the Second World War. But the result is shy of an outright majority - and the AfD may have to find coalition forces. The party wants strict immigration curbs, warmer ties with Russia and less support for Ukraine.
