What Do You Do When You Restore a Barn Find 300 SL Coupe? – The First Steps!

You asked for it – so we’re taking you along for a new series following the complete restoration of this remarkable 300 SL barn find from Portugal. In this first episode, the 300 SL arrives at HK-ENGINEERING in Polling, Germany, where we begin by carefully assessing the condition of the body, engine and chassis. The Coupé is then prepared for one of the first major steps of the restoration: separating the body from its tubular spaceframe so that it can be sent for paint removal and a much closer inspection. Meanwhile, work continues on the rolling chassis. We remove the brake and fuel lines, take out the engine and begin dismantling the axles and other components – gradually taking the car back to its foundations. But the big question is: What will we find underneath? Has the 300 SL survived its decades in storage as well as we hope? Are there previous repairs, corrosion or hidden damage within the body or frame? This is only the beginning.
