India’s Uranium Mission: Nuclear Submarines, Defence Power & China Threat | Amber Zaidi

India is stepping up its efforts to strengthen its domestic uranium supply, and the stakes go far beyond electricity generation. Uranium is a strategically important resource for India's nuclear energy programme and its wider nuclear fuel cycle. But how important is it for India's national security and defence capabilities? The government is moving ahead with plans for new uranium mining and processing projects at Rohil in Rajasthan's Sikar district and Jajwal in Chhattisgarh. Each project is planned with a capacity of 2,500 tonnes per day, subject to statutory clearances. At the same time, Meghalaya's Assembly has unanimously opposed uranium mining and uranium ore-processing facilities in the state, citing concerns involving local communities, land rights and environmental protection. WHY URANIUM MATTERS FOR INDIA'S DEFENCE Uranium is not just another mineral. It is a critical input in the nuclear fuel cycle, and its strategic importance extends to India's long-term nuclear capabilities. One major defence connection is nuclear-powered submarines. Their onboard reactors require nuclear fuel to generate propulsion power, allowing submarines to remain underwater for extended periods without conventional refuelling. India's expanding submarine programme makes nuclear technology and fuel-cycle expertise strategically important. However, nuclear-powered submarines must be distinguished from conventional diesel-electric submarines. Uranium is not the fuel for conventional submarines, and the exact fuel specifications and sourcing for India's naval reactors are not publicly established.
