The Origins of the English Civil War

In this lecture, Professor Mike Braddick (University of Sheffield) explores the origins of the English Civil War, focusing in particular on: (i) why the people of England were so unhappy with Charles I in the 1630s; (ii) Charles' preferred form of Protestantism (Arminianism); (iii) his attempts to raise money by legally dubious means (e.g. Ship Money); and (iv) his refusal to call a Parliament for more than a decade.
