What would it actually take to have a house that's basically never messy?
Not spotless or sterile. Just picked up most of the time: clear surfaces, a kitchen you can start cooking in right away, room in the fridge and pantry for groceries, a made bed, and dressers and laundry systems with room for everything to go away easily.
In this video, I share how I tried living like mess could happen, but it couldn't stay. Our house almost never gets messy from one big event — it's 10 little things left for later, plus another day's worth of life on top of it. I wanted to stop the backlog, where Monday's mess is still there on Wednesday with Tuesday and Wednesday added to it.
Here's what I practiced:
And what I stopped doing: putting things down "for now" on the dining table, stairs or counter, starting an organizing project when what the house needed was a pickup, waiting until I felt like it, carrying things halfway and leaving them, and using big catch-all baskets as a permanent solution.
Did I get to never-messy? We live here, so the house looks lived-in from about 4:00 to 8:00 — bowls, mugs, blankets, books and socks included. What changed is the mess stopped hanging around and building day after day. No more giving up half of Saturday to recover from the week.
If you want another simple way to keep things steady, watch my hotel cleaning routine next — it's one of my favorite supports for this.
