The Charger 440 build reaches the final chapter.
Over the last three episodes, I took this replacement Mopar 440 from a bare block through the complete short block and top-end assembly. Now it’s time to get the engine and drivetrain back into the car and finally hear the new 440 run.
In this episode, I cover:
installing the flywheel
installing the Science Friction clutch
fitting the Quick Time bellhousing and mid-plate
bolting up the Tremec TKO 600
installing the complete drivetrain back into the 1968 Charger
preparing the engine for first startup
first fire-up of the newly rebuilt 440
Getting the engine running should have been the big payoff, but the job wasn’t finished yet.
After startup, I ended up dealing with multiple oil leaks, including the one that so many big-block Mopar owners know all too well — the rear main seal.
I walk through the process of replacing the rear main seal with the engine still installed in the car, which may be helpful for anyone facing the same problem on a Chrysler big block. I also try a one-piece rear main seal in an effort to finally get the leak under control.
This episode didn’t go exactly the way I expected when I started the rebuild, but that’s part of working on old cars. Sometimes getting the engine assembled and running is only the beginning of the troubleshooting.
Thanks for following along through all four episodes of the Charger 440 build.
