Alice Alaso: Uganda Is Running Towards Dictatorship

Ugandan politician Alice Alaso has warned that the country is experiencing a shrinking civic space, weakening independent institutions and growing barriers to political participation, saying Uganda is moving towards dictatorship. Alaso argues that institutions such as Parliament, the judiciary and the public service are losing their independence, making it increasingly difficult for citizens to express alternative views and participate freely in governance. She also highlights how militarised politics disproportionately affects women, who may face threats to their personal safety and families when participating in political activities. Alaso further criticises the rising financial demands of politics, warning that high nomination fees, campaign costs and mobilisation expenses can exclude capable women who lack sufficient resources.
