Do you understand English, but still translate every sentence in your head before you speak? Maybe someone asks you a simple question, but your brain first creates the answer in your native language, translates every word into English, checks the grammar, and searches for the “perfect” vocabulary. By the time you’re ready to speak, the conversation has already moved on. In this A2–B1 English podcast, Lily and Sam talk about how to stop translating in your head and start communicating more directly in English. You’ll learn why word-for-word translation makes speaking slower and more stressful, and how using simple English can actually make you sound more natural. 🗣️ In today’s episode, you’ll practice how to: ✅ Stop translating every sentence word for word ✅ Accept simpler English when speaking ✅ Respond faster in real conversations ✅ Use the English words you already know ✅ Describe something when you don’t know the exact word ✅ Connect English words directly to objects and ideas ✅ Learn useful phrases as complete “chunks” ✅ Think in English without building every sentence from grammar rules ✅ Speak more naturally under pressure You’ll learn useful ideas and expressions like: “Keep it simple.” “I drew a blank.” “I don’t mind.” “It depends on the weather.” “Sorry, one more time?” “Could you slow down a little bit?” Lily and Sam explain why trying to translate complex thoughts from your native language can make speaking much harder. Sometimes learners try to sound as sophisticated in English as they do in their first language, but that creates unnecessary pressure. A short sentence like “More napkins, please” can often communicate more effectively than a long, perfectly translated sentence. You’ll also learn how to build a more direct connection between English and the world around you. Instead of seeing a cup, thinking of the word in your native language, and then translating it, practice seeing the object and immediately thinking “cup.” If you don’t know a word, describe it using words you already know instead of stopping the conversation to search for the perfect vocabulary. Another important strategy is learning chunks instead of isolated words. Rather than learning only “depends,” learn the full phrase “It depends on the weather.” Instead of learning only “mind,” learn “I don’t mind.” These ready-made phrases help you speak faster because you don’t need to build every sentence from zero. The episode also includes a fast-response speaking game where Sam has to answer real-life situations immediately without translating first. The goal is simple: give a short, clear answer quickly instead of a perfect answer ten seconds too late. 💬 CHALLENGE: What is one simple English phrase or “chunk” that you use all the time in real conversations? For example: “I don’t mind.” Write your favorite phrase in the comments and share it with other English learners. 👍 If you enjoyed this episode, like the video, subscribe to Sound English Channel, and share it with a friend who always thinks too much before speaking English. #LearnEnglish #EnglishPodcast #ThinkInEnglish #StopTranslating #EnglishSpeaking #EnglishConversation #SpeakingPractice #EnglishFluency #A2English #B1English #EnglishForBeginners #PracticeEnglish
