My husband mocked me in front of his family. Without me, she would have nothing. His mother added, and be nobody. Everyone laughed. I looked at my husband and asked, want to tell her. He went pale. His mother frowned and asked, tell me what.
I am Naomi, thirty four years old, and my husband Marcus thought he was the most brilliant tech executive in Atlanta. He had no idea the anonymous venture capital firm that just handed his company ten million dollars belonged entirely to the wife he was currently humiliating. Before I continue this story, let me know where you are watching from in the comments below. Hit like and subscribe if you have ever had to stand up to a family who underestimated your worth.
The crystal chandeliers in the private dining room of the Buckhead Country Club cast a warm glow over the celebration. Tonight was supposed to be about Marcus. His real estate technology startup had just closed a massive funding round, and his mother Vivian had invited half of the city's Black elite to witness her son's triumph. Vivian sat at the head of the table, her pearls gleaming, holding court with fellow alumni and local politicians. I sat quietly next to Marcus, wearing a simple tailored charcoal suit that Vivian had already loudly criticized as looking like I was headed to a funeral instead of a victory party.
Across the table sat Jasmine, my husband's sister, covered in designer labels paid for by the company credit card. Next to her was her husband Brad. Brad was a thirty two year old white man who held the title of Chief Operating Officer at Marcus's company. He had absolutely no qualifications for the job other than marrying Jasmine, but he carried himself with a specific kind of unearned arrogance. He loved to sprinkle his conversations with subtle jabs, constantly reminding everyone in the room that he felt superior to the very people paying his salary.
