How Did Ancient Egyptians Sleep With Mosquitoes Everywhere

How did Ancient Egyptians sleep with mosquitoes everywhere—without window screens, electric fans, insect repellent, or any knowledge that mosquitoes could spread malaria? In this episode of Ancient Human, we reconstruct the missing Ancient Egyptian bedroom from the evidence that survived: Queen Hetepheres I’s bed canopy, Herodotus’ account of nets and elevated sleeping, Egyptian beds and headrests, household protection linked with Bes, modern mosquito experiments, and ancient evidence of Plasmodium falciparum. The surprising part is not that Ancient Egyptians had one perfect mosquito solution. It’s that archaeology gives us several pieces of the answer—while the ordinary cloth, nets, and household habits we most want to see are often exactly the things that disappeared.
