In this video, I play Super Monkey Ball for the Nintendo GameCube using Baby. My goal was 9999 Play Points, which is a perfect score. To achieve this, you have to finish every level of Expert, Expert Extra, and Master without warping or falling out. I did this on February 9th of 2002 and was the first known person to do it.
This video was on my old Vortiginous site and was uploaded to YT for historical purposes. Thanks to Claris Robyn for holding on to this!
Additional StoryTime
---------------------------------------
I got Super Monkey Ball on the US GCN launch day (11/17/2001). I played the game enough to unlock the mini games and moved on to some other games. On New Years Eve of 2001, I decided to play the game again since I had the next day off from work. I made it through Expert and went to GameFAQs to see if there were any tips for some of the floors that I had trouble with. One of the FAQs, written by TChurch, worshiped a player named SnapDragon who had first discovered the Master floors. Being a pretty competitive person, I figured that if this SnapDragon fellow had unlocked Master, so could I.
I started playing nightly after work, and a week or so later, I had completed Master! I had also discovered a community of Monkey Ball players on the GameFAQs message board who competed for high scores and the like at a site called The Super Monkey Ball Elite, created and run by Frode Klow as a sister site of The Perfect Dark Elite. I started to participate in the high score competition on individual floors and learned that 9999 Play Points was a Holy Grail achievement that even the mighty SnapDragon was unable to attain. I decided to go for it, and the rest is history.
Being involved in The Elite community made me realize how important it was to prove my claims, so I started video taping whenever I was trying for something big. I continued this practice even after I was retired from Monkey Ball competition, which is why I had other speed runs available back when very few other people did.
