Operation Sindoor 2.0: Will NAVIC Redefine Indian Warfare?
India's indigenous satellite navigation system, NAVIC, has been restored to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites after the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite aboard its GSLV-F18 rocket. But could this achievement become a critical military advantage for India during a future conflict or even Operation Sindoor 2.0?
The origins of NAVIC go back to the Kargil War, particularly kargil war 1999, when India reportedly faced restrictions on accessing American GPS information during the conflict. This experience highlighted the dangers of depending on foreign-controlled navigation systems and accelerated India's efforts to build its own satellite navigation network. Today, NAVIC provides independent Positioning, Navigation and Timing capabilities across India and approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders. Its civilian Standard Positioning Service and encrypted Restricted Service are designed to support both public applications and authorised military users.
For the Indian Army, NAVIC can support troop positioning, military logistics and vehicle navigation. The Indian Air Force can benefit from navigation support for aircraft, while the Indian Navy can use it for maritime operations across strategically important waters. Its potential applications in drones, precision-guided weapons and electronic warfare make it particularly relevant to India's future defence preparedness.
The successful ISRO Launch of NVS-03 also introduces the L1 frequency alongside existing L5 and S bands, supported by indigenous atomic clock technology. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan confirmed that the satellite restores the minimum requirement for NAVIC's positioning, navigation and timing services. As discussions surrounding Operation Sindoor, India Vs Pakistan, India Pakistan War and India Pakistan Conflict continue to shape current affairs and geopolitics, could NAVIC become important in a future military confrontation?
