Why The Sumerian King List Is The Most Terrifying Text In History
More than four thousand years ago, the Sumerians carved a list of kings into clay, recording the rulers who once governed the lands of Mesopotamia. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than an administrative record: the names of rulers, the cities they controlled, the order of succession, and the length of each reign. But near the beginning, the document records something that seems almost impossible. The first eight kings are said to have ruled for a combined total of 241,200 years, before a Great Flood swept across the world.
Over the following century, more than twenty copies of this text were discovered in different ancient cities. Every version preserves the same basic structure: an age of kings who ruled for tens of thousands of years, a flood that divided the timeline, and reigns that gradually became shorter until the record entered a period that archaeology could verify. So were these enormous figures simply mathematical symbols? Did they encode astronomical cycles? Or does the Sumerian King List preserve a distorted memory of an age that existed before the civilization we know? In this video, we will decode one of the most disturbing ancient texts ever discovered and search for the answer.
