Is your Bosch cooktop showing Error 42, shutting off during use, or displaying the fault only when several cooking zones are running? In this video, we explain the possible causes of Bosch Cooktop Error 42 and look at a real-world repair involving the electronic control board and failed electrolytic capacitors. On some older Bosch electric cooktops, Error 42 has been linked to an electronic control problem. One documented symptom is an error that appears intermittently at first, then becomes more frequent as the cooktop is placed under greater load. The unit may work normally with one burner, then shut down when additional cooking zones are turned on. In the repair shown here, inspection of the control board revealed two electrolytic capacitors with swollen tops, a strong visible sign that the components had deteriorated. Instead of immediately replacing the complete electronic control module, the damaged capacitors were removed and replaced. In this video, you’ll see how to: • Identify Bosch Cooktop Error 42 symptoms • Reset the cooktop before further troubleshooting • Disconnect power safely at the circuit breaker • Remove the cooktop from the countertop • Open the lower housing • Access the electronic control boards • Inspect the board for damaged components • Recognize swollen electrolytic capacitors • Remove the control board carefully • Disconnect and reconnect ribbon cables • Desolder failed capacitors • Install replacement capacitors with correct polarity • Reassemble the Bosch cooktop • Restore power and test multiple cooking zones One important point is that Error 42 does not have a universal meaning across every Bosch cooktop model. Bosch has produced many different electric and induction cooktops with different electronic systems, so the exact diagnostic procedure depends on the model number. Always locate the full model number before ordering a control board or electronic components. If the error appears only occasionally, start with a simple power reset. Turn the cooktop off at the circuit breaker for at least 30 seconds, then restore power and test it again. If Error 42 keeps returning, possible causes may include: • Electronic control board failure • Aging electrolytic capacitors • Power supply instability • Loose or damaged connectors • Ribbon cable connection problems • Heat-related electronic failure • Internal wiring problems • Incoming electrical supply issues In the repair shown in this video, the original capacitors were rated at 470 microfarads. When replacing electrolytic capacitors, the capacitance should match the original specification, while the voltage rating must be suitable for the circuit. Polarity is also extremely important. Electrolytic capacitors have positive and negative terminals, and installing one backward can damage the capacitor and the electronic control board. Always photograph the original orientation before removing any component. A swollen capacitor is an obvious warning sign, but not every failed capacitor will show visible damage. Likewise, Error 42 can have another cause on a different Bosch model, so replacing capacitors should not be treated as a guaranteed universal fix. If the cooktop works after the repair, test it under realistic load. Do not test only one cooking zone for a few seconds. If the original problem appeared when several burners were running, gradually operate multiple zones and confirm that the cooktop remains stable without displaying Error 42 again. ⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING Bosch electric and induction cooktops operate on dangerous mains voltage. Always disconnect the cooktop at the circuit breaker before removing it from the countertop, opening the metal housing, disconnecting wiring, or touching electronic components. Electronic control boards may contain capacitors that can retain electrical charge even after the appliance has been disconnected. Component-level repair, including soldering capacitors onto a control board, should only be attempted if you have experience with electronic repair and understand the electrical risks. If you are not comfortable diagnosing or repairing electronic boards, replacing the complete control module or using a qualified appliance technician is the safer option. This video is intended for general troubleshooting and educational purposes. If your Bosch cooktop displays Error 42, start with a power reset, verify the electrical supply, inspect connectors and wiring, and then check the electronic control board for obvious signs of component failure. A careful diagnosis can help you avoid replacing an expensive Bosch control module unnecessarily. #BoschCooktop #BoschError42 #Error42 #BoschRepair #CooktopRepair #ElectricCooktop #InductionCooktop #ControlBoard #CapacitorRepair #ApplianceRepair #BoschAppliance #CooktopError
