LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY — HUNTING ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA Hunting Island Lighthouse stands in Hunting Island State Park in Beaufort County. Its story includes two different towers: the first lighthouse was built in 1859 and destroyed during the Civil War; the present tower was completed in 1875. The 136-foot tower was constructed with a cast-iron exterior and brick lining. Its sectional design allowed it to be dismantled and moved—an important feature when severe shoreline erosion forced its relocation in 1889. The 1875 lighthouse originally used a second-order Fresnel lens. Its service as a navigational light ended in 1933. Today, 167 steps lead to the observation deck. Following a restoration closure that began in 2022, the lighthouse reopened to visitors in 2026, continuing its story as a treasured South Carolina landmark.
