She had $620 in food stamps — more than enough to pay. Instead, she stole $164 from Walmart self-checkout using scan avoidance. Bodycam analysis breaks down every legal mistake she made in 30 minutes of footage.
Officers in Florida responded to a Walmart after loss prevention reported systematic scan avoidance at self-checkout. The method: pork chops — four taken, two scanned. T-bone steaks — cheapest scanned three times, expensive ones skipped. Lunchables — fourteen taken, ten scanned. One missed scan is a mistake. Three categories is intent.
Under Florida Statute 812.015, retail theft by scan avoidance is a first-degree misdemeanor. But $164 in stolen merchandise was only the beginning.
What happened next built the prosecution’s entire case — without a single interrogation technique. She volunteered everything: admitted intoxication on camera (“I am a little tipsy”), described her scanning method step by step, and disclosed she was on community control for a suspended license and substance offense.
Each voluntary statement created compounding legal exposure: open container violation (FL §316.1936), no child car seat (FL §316.613), potential DCF referral, and a separate violation of community control hearing under FL §948.06 — where a new arrest alone, not a conviction, triggers review.
The Fifth Amendment right to remain silent was available from the first second. She never used it. Every word she spoke is now locked into the evidentiary record.
