In August 2024, Google paid a reported $2.7 billion to license Character.AI's technology and take its two founders back. Two years later, in October 2026, Character.AI filed for bankruptcy. In between: a federal lawsuit over a 14-year-old's death, a judge who refused the company's free-speech defence, a settlement Google also signed, and two US states suing.
This is a story about who actually pays when an AI product goes wrong. An app built for lonely people, where users averaged about two hours a day, never really checked ages and had no one watching the conversations. The founders and early investors walked away richer. Employees, families and, in the end, Google carried the cost. And no court ever said who was responsible. So: the AI, the company, or the government that writes the rules?
VIEWER NOTE: This is commentary and analysis based on public court filings, company statements and news reports available as of October 2026, and reflects our best understanding of the story. Lawsuit allegations are claims, not proven facts; no court ruled on responsibility, and the settlement included no admission of wrongdoing. The teenager is not named or shown. Opinions are my own and not legal advice. Clips are used briefly for commentary and news reporting. Spot an error? Tell me in the comments and I will correct it.

NOTES ON THE NUMBERS
$2.7 billion is the widely reported figure from the WSJ; Google has not confirmed it.
"Doubled their money": reports put early investors' buyout at about 2.5x.
20 million monthly users and "fewer than 10% under 18" are the company's own figures; the age figure was self-reported by users.
Settlement terms are confidential, and no party admitted wrongdoing. No court ruled on responsibility.
Pennsylvania's suit concerns chatbots presenting themselves as licensed medical professionals. Kentucky's concerns harm to children.
