𝗛𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲 could be called the alpha and omega of Zen shakuhachi music 禪 尺八, as it is considered both the simplest and the most difficult piece to play. Simple because it has few notes, and difficult because of the infinite potential inherent in each of those notes. In fact it is said that some of the Komūsō 虛無僧 monks played this piece their entire lives as part of a Buddhist practice aimed at revealing everything hidden within the music, themselves and the Universe. I myself have played this piece thousands of times over the past decades, and it still reveals new depths and appears fresh as a morning sunrise each time I play it. The name 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲 comprises two Japanese words - ‘Hon’ 本 and ‘Shirabe’ 調. Hon means ‘original’ and Shirabe can either mean ‘melody’ or ‘enquiry’. This subtle layering of meaning reflects one aspect of Zen practice - enquiry into the original nature of the Self - as well as the way that music can be used to accompany this enquiry - discovering the 'Absolute Sound' 徹底音 through exploration of the deeper realms of our consciousness, and then expressing and communicating this as 'One Sound Enlightenment' 一音成仏. The understanding that the world evolved from sound is incorporated into the creation myths of most of the great civilisations and indigenous wisdom traditions. In this way the whole macro and micro cosmic universe can be understood as frequency vibrations, and music is the expressive form of this primal sound. In fact, each time I drop into the deepest place within myself from where the music arises, and I play the opening notes of 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲, I feel as though I am bearing witness and participating in the birth of a new world. Such is the profound relationship I feel with this piece of music. 𝐓𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐮𝐲𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐢: ”The honkyoku (traditional shakuhachi music) represents an infinite source of wisdom to be tapped. The more you think and feel the depths of this music the more you realize your own depths and that of the universe. You have to investigate inside your self very seriously as a fresh living entity.
