The liquidation of the Jewish ghetto in Końskowola, in the Lublin District of German-occupied Poland, in October 1942 was part of the systematic destruction of the Jewish population during Operation Reinhard. German police forces assembled the remaining Jewish inhabitants, separated those selected for deportation or forced labour from those condemned to death, and carried out a massacre that destroyed the town's Jewish community.
This documentary reconstructs the persecution and destruction of the Jews of Końskowola, focusing on the events of October 1942 and the role of Reserve Police Battalion 101 in the German extermination campaign in the Lublin region. In this video I take you on the same route that was taken by the victims and describe how the massacre took place.
The history begins with the establishment of the ghetto and the increasingly restrictive conditions imposed on its inhabitants. Jewish residents faced confinement, forced labour, deportations and the constant threat of murder. The surrounding area became part of a wider system of ghettos, labour camps, deportation routes and execution sites through which the German occupation authorities pursued the destruction of Polish Jewry.
The October 1942 liquidation must be understood within this wider context. Reserve Police Battalion 101, a German Order Police formation whose participation in mass shootings and deportations has been extensively documented, was involved in the murder of Jewish communities across occupied Poland. Its operations in the Lublin District form an important part of the history of the Holocaust and the implementation of Operation Reinhard.
This account examines the evidence concerning the massacre at Końskowola, the actions of the German police, and the fate of the town's Jewish inhabitants. It also considers the reported killing site in the Brzezinki woodland, east or northeast of the Jewish cemetery, and the importance of distinguishing between the location of the former cemetery and the precise area where victims were executed and buried. Establishing the geography of the massacre requires careful comparison of survivor testimony, local evidence and post-war investigative records rather than assuming that every killing took place within the cemetery itself.
The documentary also places Końskowola within the wider pattern of German anti-Jewish operations in the Puławy area during 1942. The destruction of the ghetto was not an isolated episode of wartime violence but part of a coordinated campaign of persecution, deportation and mass murder directed against Jewish communities throughout the General Government.
By examining the chronology, the geography of the killing site and the involvement of Reserve Police Battalion 101, this documentary seeks to reconstruct what happened in Końskowola during one of the most violent phases of the Holocaust in the Lublin region.
The massacre is also a reminder of the importance of local historical research. Police unit records, post-war criminal investigations, witness testimony and surviving geographical evidence can help establish how German occupation policy was translated into the murder of individual communities.
This channel examines the history of the Second World War and the Holocaust through detailed investigations of historical locations, German occupation forces, wartime crimes and the documentary evidence that survives.
