Spalted Sphere

This was hollowed from the bottom, plugged and then the plug rounded. It is a hollow sphere. I chose this shape to maximize the spalting effect of the wood. The spalting was only going 8" or so deep but the end grain spalting was so amazing. So, that's what I featured. There has been a battle with cracking on this piece and I will have more to fill in a few weeks—the joy of the pith... Avoid it if you can. The base is walnut and the sphere is not attached so you can position it how you like or roll it around. Although the warping as it dries is affecting smooth rolling. Kind of looks like The Eye of Sauron! 9x9" Finished with linseed oil and Mahoney's Walnut Oil Wax.
