The Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad Interviews Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad (Kerala Science Literature Movement) is a people's science movement in Kerala. Its foundational slogan is "Science for Social Revolution." The Parishad as it exists today was formed through the integration of three scientific streams. The first form, the Kerala Shastra Sahitya Samiti, was established at the Bhadrakala Sammelanam held in Ottappalam in 1957. Its primary goal was to translate and popularise science texts into Malayalam language. Its main activities included publishing the book Aadhunika Sastram (1958) and translating Darwin's work Origin of Species into Malayalam. The Parishad was formally inaugurated on September 10, 1962, at St Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Kozhikode. It started with a membership of around forty Malayalam writers interested in science writing. Dr. K. Bhaskaran Nair was the first president. K. G. Adiyodi and N. V. Krishna Variar were also office bearers. "Science Literature in Malayalam" was the founding motto of the organization. In its initial years, the Parishad's main activities included a few symposia and seminars organized in Kozhikode and adjoining areas. The third stream originated outside Kerala. From 1965 onwards, some Malayali scientists in Bombay began actively discussing the possibilities of creating science literature in Malayalam. This was led by young scientists like Dr. M. P. Parameswaran, who had returned from Moscow after a PhD in nuclear science. Parameswaran then joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India’s premier nuclear research centre. It was during this period that the Parishad prioritized enabling people by shaping a lifestyle consistent with scientific thinking. They registered the organisation on July 14, 1967, under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. The most fundamental unit of the movement is the unit (local chapter), with most units operating within villages as their geographical scope. The Parishad publishes three periodicals: Shastragati (since October 1966), published with the vision of "Science for Social Revolution"; Shastra Keralam (since June 1969), aimed at high school students and the general public; and Eureka (since June 1970), focused at fostering scientific thinking in children up to upper primary classes through games and songs, LUCA (2014) is the Parishad's online science portal in Malayalam. The Parishad's major interventions in the environmental field include: The Silent Valley movement, a study on the pollution of the Chaliyar River in 1978, the first Munderi March (a protest to protect the Munderi forest) in 1984, a protest march against the Bhopal Disaster in 1984, and the declaration of Ernakulam as a fully literate district in February 4, 1990.
