The Bentley Colliery disaster of 20 November 1931 began during an ordinary afternoon shift near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Three explosions followed in one night. Why did the rescue effort end with a decision to seal the district, leaving five men underground? This documentary follows the events in the North-East District of the Barnsley seam: the first blast, miners helping injured workmates, and rescue parties advancing through smoke, fire and dangerous air while families waited at the pit head. Through the experiences of pony driver John Ward, mines inspector Edgar Frazer and surveyor Samuel Temperley, it examines the courage of those who went back into the workings—and the risks that made further recovery impossible. The story then turns to the public inquiry led by Sir Henry Walker. What could investigators establish when much of the physical evidence was behind sealed roadways? The film explores methane, underground fires and spontaneous heating without presenting the suspected ignition source as a proven fact. Bentley’s memorial remembers forty-five men and boys. Beyond the rescue and inquiry, this is also the story of the families, the mining village and a loss whose consequences lasted for decades.
