📈 Video Type

📊 Data Sources
Historical GDP (1700–2022)
• Maddison Project Database
• Long-run historical GDP estimates
Future GDP (2023–2031)
• International Monetary Fund (IMF)
• World Economic Outlook Database
• GDP at Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)
🔬 Methodology
• Historical GDP values are taken from the Maddison Project Database.
• Future values (2023–2031) use IMF World Economic Outlook GDP (PPP) projections.
• IMF values originally published in billions were converted into full figures by multiplying each value by 1,000,000,000.
• Where historical data were available only for selected benchmark years, annual values between those years were estimated using linear interpolation to create a smooth year-by-year animation.
• Countries remain blank before their first available observation in the historical dataset. No GDP values were created before a country's first recorded data point.
• This video covers Europe as a geographic region, not the European Union. It includes countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, the Balkans, the Baltic states, the Caucasus, and other European economies where data are available.
• Historical GDP values are assigned to the corresponding modern-day country where possible. Historical political boundaries, borders, and state names have changed over time. For viewer clarity and consistency, modern country names are used throughout the entire timeline, rather than changing names to match historical states or political entities. This approach is intended to make long-term comparisons easier to understand.
• Country names have been standardized where necessary to maintain consistency across the historical and IMF datasets.
📌 Note
This video is for educational and entertainment purposes. Historical estimates and future projections are based on publicly available datasets. Figures may vary from other publications due to differences in methodology, revisions, purchasing power calculations, territorial definitions, source updates, and later data revisions. Rankings reflect the data sources and methodology used in this visualization.
