£20,000 a week sounds like a footballer who's set for life. But how much of it does he actually keep, and how long does he have to turn it into something that lasts? We took one real Premier League dressing room, Brentford, put every estimated wage on a single line, and worked out where a player can afford the watch, the car, the house, and finally the freedom to never need football again. The salary is enormous. The window isn't. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 £20,000 a week 0:45 What he actually keeps 1:36 One Premier League dressing room 2:26 Look rich, live rich 3:24 The line nobody sees 4:07 The second clock 5:04 Three careers 6:05 The verdict 6:30 One more catch 📊 How we worked it out • Take-home pay: 2026/27 England income tax (45% above £125,140, personal allowance gone) and employee National Insurance (2% above £50,270). Simple PAYE only: no pension, bonuses, image rights or agent fees. • Brentford wages are estimates (SalarySport, 2026/27). Clubs don't publish salaries, and estimate sites disagree. • Our model: each player saves half his take-home pay, no investment growth, targeting £100,000 a year for life (25× rule = £2.5m) plus an average London home (£554,000, ONS, Aug 2026). • Career length: a study of 4,117 players in England's top four divisions (Premier League + international outfield players averaged ~14.8 years; League Two ~6.2). 📚 Sources • Income tax & NI 2026/27: freeagent.com/rates/income-tax • Brentford wage estimates: salarysport.com/football/premier-league/brentford • London house prices: UK House Price Index, August 2026 (gov.uk) • Career length study: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12392379 • 4% / 25× rule: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4%25_rule 📷 Photos: Timmy96 (CC0), Jim Linwood (CC BY 2.0) via Wikimedia Commons.
