At the edge of Israel's Negev desert stands a forest of about four million pine trees, growing on roughly eleven inches of rain a year. When scientists at the Weizmann Institute studied it, they found something nobody expected: the forest was quietly warming the land around it.
Planting trees couldn't green the whole desert. So the farmers and scientists of the Negev stopped fighting the land and started working with it. A leaking pipe taught one engineer how to water crops drop by drop. A city's wastewater became a river for desert farms. And deep beneath the sand, warm salty water too harsh for any crop turned out to be just right for something else.
In this episode:
The Yatir forest, and the 2010 Science study that showed its hidden cost
Simcha Blass, the leaking pipe, and the birth of drip irrigation at Kibbutz Hatzerim
How Israel came to reuse close to 90 percent of its wastewater
The warm, brackish water under the Negev, and what Ben-Gurion University found could live in it
How one drop of water can be used twice, first for fish, then for olive trees
The desert truffle, and the Bedouin legend that links it to thunderstorms
You may have seen videos claiming the desert now runs on a perfect closed loop of fish, sun and sewage. The true story is more careful than that. It's a story of people learning, over decades, what the desert would allow, and some of the hardest questions are still open.
