Pixar’s Inside Out is a wonderful film that makes us laugh, cry, and empathize with the various characters – how fitting. At first glance, the movie tells a unique story about how our emotions guide us through daily life. It doesn’t take much more digging to see the different layers of depth the film has as well. Many people think that in order to live a happy and fulfilling life, we need to squash negative emotions (ones that challenge us in uncomfortable ways), and only feel joy. What we will realize with this approach is that you are fighting your natural state to feel all emotions. We are meant to experience a wide range of healthy emotions, good, bad, and everything in between. They teach us things, they help us survive, and they serve as helpful social reminders. Inside Out is filled with golden nuggets and small psychological tips to maximize your mental health. In today’s episode, I break down the movie, discussing all of these topics as they relate to the movie from a psychological perspective.
