Why is industrial flooring different from the RCC floor of a regular residential or commercial building? In this video, Engr. Adeel Jaffer explains the engineering considerations behind industrial RCC flooring used in factories, warehouses and production facilities. An industrial floor may have to carry continuous forklift movement, heavy equipment, stored materials, machinery loads and long-duration dead loads. Because of these operating conditions, its design, reinforcement and construction requirements can be very different from ordinary flooring. In this project, we provided complete reinforcement throughout the industrial floor, with additional reinforcement in areas where machinery and concentrated loads have to be considered. The floor therefore needs to withstand not only the total weight of the forklift and material being carried, but also repeated wheel loads acting over relatively small contact areas. Poorly designed industrial floors may develop cracking, settlement, surface damage or localized distress under repeated operations. MACHINERY & HEAVY LOADS Industrial buildings can also contain equipment that remains in one location for years. These machines may introduce significant concentrated loads and sometimes require dedicated foundations or machine pads depending on their weight, vibration and operating characteristics. We will discuss machine pads separately in another detailed engineering video. This video focuses primarily on the GENERAL INDUSTRIAL FLOOR and why its reinforcement and structural requirements should be considered before construction begins.
