I have been doing solo bike tours for years without any issues. Many people said solo bike tours are hazardous, but I never used to take that seriously. Until my recent tour, I crossed Shandur Top from Phander Side into Chitral. It was freezing cold, and, typically, Shandur Top is closed, but this year, as there was not much snowfall in the winter season, Shandur Top was open for jeeps and heavier vehicles. I asked if it was open for bikes and was told you could cross Shandur and go into Chitral from this side. Now very excited about the opportunity, I started my journey from Hill Top Hotel to Phander Valley Top. I was told the road would be muddy and rain in the morning, so I was on the back foot. However, crossing some difficult muddy patches, I was growing confident but unaware of what was in store for me. The road conditions kept becoming more and more difficult as I reached closer to shandur.
I fell so many times during the travel because of the slippery, icy road. The path where I was supposed to ride the tire was too narrow, and my luggage bags and front handlebar bags used to get stuck. The bike used to hit the ice/rocks on the side and then drop down.
This was a series of crazy drops, but I kept moving forward, and with the help of the Army and a local jeep in the end, where I almost gave up, I could get down from the crazy frozen Shandur Top towards Chitral into Laspur. I spent the night in Archin, a village after Laspur in Chitral.
This trip again solidified my views that the people of Chitral are most supportive. I am thankful to Saifur Rehmand and Islam-ud-din for their extraordinary help. This is the kind of gesture that really gives you the confidence that you can go into these cities and you won't have any problems because the people will do anything and everything to make sure you are safe and comfortable.
I hope you guys will enjoy the most dangerous solo bike tour of my life. Ultimately, I don't recommend anyone doing the same as it is an unnecessary risk and not for everyone.
oin me on the most dangerous solo ride of my life as I tackle the Shandur Pass under torrential rain, treacherous mud, and deep snow—relying on prayer, passion, and unexpected allies to make it through. Will I survive? Find out!
