Pain to Power | Season 6 Premiere | Mirrors, Windows, and the Way Home: Dr. Daryl Howard

Four years ago, Dr. Daryl Howard sat with me in Season 1 and said he was “planting seeds” for his next project. Tonight, we see what grew. Dr. Howard has spent more than 20 years fighting for Black boys to be seen and humanized in schools. He has done that work as a school counselor, as chair of Maryland’s statewide initiative for Black boys, through BOND (Building Our Network of Diversity), and with the young men in BOND’s learning and leadership institute for boys. His newest work is the children’s book Mr. Browne’s Assignment. It invites students to reflect on who they are, what they value, and who they are becoming. It also introduces them to something too few children ever see: a Black male teacher who sees them. In this Season 6 premiere, we talk about what it means for a boy to come home to himself, and what it means for the grown men and educators around him to do the same. We get into how a children’s book can be a tool for healing. We also look at how Daryl’s work has grown from changing systems to reaching the heart of one child. And we talk about why the most powerful thing we can do for our children is reflect back who they really are.
