He was 20 years old, an Oxford student, and one of Britain's most promising young cavers. On March 22, 1959, Neil Moss squeezed into a narrow, unexplored shaft deep inside Peak Cavern, Derbyshire — and got stuck 1,000 feet from the entrance, 40 feet down a passage barely wide enough for his shoulders. What followed became one of the largest cave rescue operations in British history: over 200 rescuers, the RAF, doctors lowered into the dark, and a desperate three-day fight against rock, rope, and rising carbon dioxide. This is the true story of the Neil Moss cave incident — a tragedy that exposed the dangers of early caving and permanently changed how cave rescue teams operate in the UK. Today, the shaft where he died is sealed and known as Moss Chamber — his final resting place, and a place of pilgrimage for cavers to this day.
