UI Stead Family Children's Hospital 2023 Kid Captain: Maggie Larson

Maggie Larson’s legs would “crumble” when she tried to walk as a toddler. At 3 years old, she was diagnosed with a rare, terminal disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy. Initially her family was told she had a short life expectancy, and nothing could be done. Then, her parents learned about a clinical trial at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital that might slow the progression of the disease. Maggie weekly receives infusions into her spine, improving in her symptoms and quality of life.
