When he learns about a cemetery offering free dirt, he visits and helps himself to several bags for his garden. The cemetery is desolate and strange, and the offer of free dirt comes with a foreboding sense of unease. As Carrington uses the dirt, his garden flourishes unusually fast—but the plants seem unnatural. Soon, he begins to experience chilling, supernatural occurrences: whispers in the night, eerie movements in the garden, and the feeling that he’s being watched. The source of the “free” dirt turns out to be grave soil, and the spirits of the dead are not pleased with being disturbed. In classic Twilight Zone fashion, Carrington's greed leads to his undoing, and he pays the ultimate price—symbolizing a dark twist on the adage: you get what you pay for.
