Plymouth has a reputation — and depending on who you ask, it's either one of Britain's most underrated coastal cities or somewhere that's been left behind. So I went to Plymouth myself to find out what it's actually like in 2026. I walked through Plymouth city centre, Armada Way and Drake Circus, headed down to the historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour, visited Plymouth Hoe and Smeaton's Tower, and explored some of the places that don't always feature in the headlines. And Plymouth is complicated. There are beautiful waterfront areas, extraordinary history and parts of the city that genuinely surprised me. But there are also empty shops, struggling streets, regeneration projects and signs of the problems affecting town and city centres across Britain. That's what I wanted to understand. Not whether Plymouth deserves another kicking on the internet — but whether the reputation matches the reality for the people who actually live, work and spend money here. Because it's very easy to call somewhere a dump from behind a screen. It's rather different when you actually go there. So is Plymouth really as bad as people say?
