Mardani Khel is a traditional, weapon-based martial art from Maharashtra, India, that focuses on agile footwork, speed, and close-combat skills History and Origins • Rooted in the 17th Century: The art form rose to prominence during the era of the Maratha Empire and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. • Guerrilla Warfare: It was designed to match the rugged hills, valleys, and terrain of the Western Ghats, supporting the fast-moving cavalry and guerrilla tactics (ganimi kava) used against heavy artillery. • Colonial Ban: After the 1857 revolt, the British banned native weapons, forcing training centers (talims) to disguise the combat system as a folk game and performance art. Dand-Patta:A straight, double-edged flexible sword featuring a gauntlet-like metal hilted handle. Lathi-Kathi:A traditional bamboo stick used for fundamental striking and blocking drills. Bhala:A long spear or javelin used for striking over medium distances. Vita:A specialized corded javelin or dart allowing longer-range attacks. Katyar & Bichchu:Short daggers and stiletto-like blades used in close-quarter hand-to-hand combat. • Training Hubs: Traditional training still takes place in select talims and akharas, notably in regions like Kolhapur and Pune. • Inclusion: It is practiced by both men and women, serving as an important tool for physical fitness, discipline, and self-defense. • Cultural Displays: Today, it is frequently demonstrated as a cultural legacy during festivals and public events.
