Liebherr LTM 1450 & Grove GMK6300L Tandem Lift Bridge Beams

Two cranes. One mission. 39 bridge beams set over two days on this bridge job in Denton. This lift took real planning before a single beam ever left Waco. We staged the LTM 1450 on-site Thursday with 295,000 lbs of counterweight, then brought in the Grove GMK6300L Friday morning with 203,000 lbs of counterweight to run tandem alongside it. The beams weighed in around 55,000 lbs each, with the LTM working a 125 ft radius and the Grove working an 80 ft radius. We were rigged and ready to lift by 9am, and the first beams started rolling in from Waco by 10. Friday, with the Grove staged on the first embankment, both cranes worked in tandem to pick and set the first span of 13 beams. At the end of the day, we moved the Grove off that embankment and onto ground level across the street, staging it in the middle of the working area to stay in chart. From there, the two cranes continued working tandem picks to set the next span of 13 beams. Once that span was down, the LTM moved from ground level, across the street, and up onto the embankment into its final position. With both cranes now in place, we set half of the last span of 13 beams before the Grove had to roll back to clear room for its final picks. After the Grove was staged in its last position, the two cranes finished out that span together and closed the job with 39 bridge beams total across the two days. This job didn't come without its hazards. We had live traffic all around us the entire time, and both cranes were tandem lifting on either side of major power lines. For the last two spans, we closed the street underneath the bridge to keep the public clear while those picks were made. That kind of working area doesn't allow for a lapse in focus. It took constant diligence from every person on site, every single pick, to keep the job moving without incident. Jobs like this come down to communication. Two cranes working in tandem, on a tight radius, with beams rolling in on a schedule, leaves no room for guessing. Our crew kept it moving swiftly and safely from start to finish.
