One avocado a day sounds like a lot of calories and fat.
So what actually happens if people eat one every day for six months?
In a large randomized trial involving more than 1,000 adults with abdominal obesity, researchers used MRI scans to measure visceral belly fat. The avocado group did not lose significantly more visceral fat than the control group.
But they also did not gain significantly more body weight.
And LDL cholesterol moved modestly lower.
In this FOOD INQUEST episode, we break down what one avocado a day really did, why the biggest belly-fat trial did not show the result many people expect, and why the most useful question may not be “Is avocado fattening?”
It may be:
What is the avocado replacing?
We also look at controlled human trials comparing avocado-containing diets with other eating patterns, why saturated fat versus unsaturated fat matters, and why one research serving should not be treated like a magic dose.
