After some more testing and some research, turns out what I thought originally wasn't the bug I thought it was. The original text as shown in the game is a bit confusing and differs from modern day Yugioh which simplifies the English text greatly to say: "If the equipped monster attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent." The real bug is with the CPU player not realizing this and continuing to attack and take damage instead of adjusting how it plays.
