Srikalahasti: The Kashi of the SouthSrikalahasti Temple is one of the most revered Shiva temples in South India. Located in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, it sits majestically on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River. It is famously known as Dakshina Kashi (The Kashi of the South).1. The Power of "Air" (Vayu Lingam)Srikalahasti is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams—five temples that represent the five elements of nature ($Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space$).The Element: It represents Air (Vayu). The Miracle: Inside the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum), there is a lamp that constantly flickers as if blown by a breeze, even though the sanctum is airtight and there are no windows or fans. This is believed to be the physical manifestation of Lord Shiva as the Lord of Wind.2. The Name: Sri-Kala-HastiThe name "Srikalahasti" is derived from three animals that worshipped Lord Shiva here and attained salvation:Sri: The Spider (who wove a web over the Lingam to protect it).Kala: The Snake (who placed a gem on the Lingam).Hasti: The Elephant (who washed the Lingam with river water). To honor their devotion, Lord Shiva incorporated all three into the name of the holy site.3. Rahu-Ketu Sarpa Dosha NivaranaThis temple is globally famous for the Rahu-Ketu Puja. It is believed that performing this ritual here nullifies the ill effects of the planets Rahu and Ketu in one's astrological chart.Unique Fact: Unlike almost every other Hindu temple in India, Srikalahasti remains open during Solar and Lunar eclipses. Special Abhishekhams are performed during these times because the temple is considered to have control over the celestial bodies.4. Architecture & HistoryThe temple reflects the grandeur of multiple Indian dynasties:Pallava Dynasty: The original structure dates back to the 5th century.Chola Dynasty: Major expansions occurred in the 10th century.Vijayanagara Empire: The massive 120-foot tall Raja Gopuram (main gateway) was constructed by King Krishnadevaraya in 1516 AD to celebrate his victory over the Gajapatis.
