Listen to the complete King James Version of Genesis 36, with gentle Elm narration, Scripture captions, full-colour hand-tinted copperplate illustrations, and an original sacred instrumental and wordless choral score.
Genesis 36 records the generations of Esau, who is Edom. The chapter names his wives and sons, then describes his departure from Jacob: their possessions and cattle were too great for the land where they lived together. Esau settles in mount Seir (Genesis 36:1-8).
The record continues through the sons and grandsons of Esau and the dukes descended from them. These family lists preserve the names associated with Edom, including Eliphaz, Reuel and their households (36:9-19). The sons of Seir the Horite and their descendants follow, with the brief account of Anah finding mules in the wilderness while tending his father's asses (36:20-30).
The chapter then names kings who reigned in Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel. Their successive reigns and named cities give way to a closing list of the dukes of Edom according to their families, places and names (36:31-43).
For reflection: Why does Genesis preserve the family history of Esau alongside the story of Jacob? What reason does this chapter give for their separation? How do the lists of descendants, places and rulers broaden the setting of the surrounding narrative? Read the genealogy patiently, noticing both repeated names and the distinctions the text makes between families.
