Whispering Hope, the beloved 1868 hymn of hope, sung by Rosemary Siemens on piano and vocals with strings. A gentle, peaceful version of a hymn that has comforted hearts for over 150 years.
A peaceful hymn for prayer, morning devotions, and quiet moments when your heart needs a little hope.
I'm so excited to finally sing this one for you! Whispering Hope was written in 1868 by Septimus Winner, a Philadelphia violinist and music teacher whose father built violins. He published it under the pen name Alice Hawthorne, a nod to his mother, who was related to the author Nathaniel Hawthorne. He also wrote the words to "Listen to the Mockingbird" and "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" He wrote Whispering Hope as a duet, and this gentle duet went on to become one of his most beloved songs of all! Over the years it has been loved in recordings by Jim Reeves, Anne Murray, and the Gaithers, and now I'm so happy to share my own peaceful version with you.
The hymn draws on Hebrews 6:19 (KJV): "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast."
Who sang Whispering Hope in your home growing up? Tell me in the comments, I read every single one!
Whispering Hope lyrics:
Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word
Wait till the darkness is over
Wait till the tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow
After the darkness is gone
Whispering hope
Oh how welcome Thy voice
Making my heart
In its sorrow rejoice
If, in the dusk of the twilight
Dim be the region afar
Will not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star
Then when the night is upon us
Why should the heart sink away
When the dark midnight is over
Watch for the breaking of day
Whispering hope
Oh how welcome Thy voice
Making my heart
In its sorrow rejoice
Making my heart
In its sorrow rejoice
