CZ 175 Sport and Trail. A 50 mile ride during a NZ spring weekend, on the rural back roads of West Auckland. The bikes both performed very well on the day. They’re well suited to the terrain and the pace of travel on country roads in NZ. The video demonstrates how these Soviet-era Czechoslovakian 2 stroke motorcycles from the mid 1970’s perform and what they’re like to ride with their old fashioned, near zero technology, piston-port engines with a long stroke and heavy flywheels. Somewhat surprisingly, despite their limitations they perform extremely well, they’re fuel efficient and they were made to work hard for a long time. They were relied upon to cover vast distances across difficult terrain by millions, carrying at least two people, their animals, many wares and equipment. Huge numbers of people were mobilised by this type of machine. The CZ 175 has to be one of the highest achievers at the lowest price. A brand new 175 Trail from Clifton Motors, Takapuna, Auckland cost $699.00 in 1977.
