On Christmas night 1492 Columbus's flagship ran onto a reef off Hispaniola. The ship was lost, and thirty-nine men were left on the shore — the first European settlement in the New World. When Columbus came back eleven months later, not one of them was there.
The first voyage of Columbus, told from his journal and the accounts of his contemporaries.
