If your New Zealand job search consists mainly of checking SEEK and LinkedIn, applying for advertised roles and waiting for a response, you may be missing a big part of how the job market actually works. In this episode of my Why You’re Not Getting Interviews in New Zealand series, I explain why applying online is still important, but why I don’t believe it’s enough anymore. I share two real examples from inside the New Zealand job market: Roles that haven't even been approved or advertised yet, but potential candidates are already being referred. Recruiters building relationships with candidates before they have the right position available. That’s the part of job hunting we don't always see. By the time you find a job advertised on SEEK or LinkedIn, there may already be people known to the hiring manager, referred through existing relationships, or sitting on a recruiter's radar. And if you're currently outside New Zealand, you might be thinking: “How am I supposed to build those relationships when I'm not even in the country?” It is possible. My wife and I both had to do it, and I see people in our community doing it too.
