I spent twenty-five years in the blues. Then I discovered The Warning — and guitarist Dany Villarreal completely caught my attention. I've been exploring the music and story of The Warning band, the Mexican rock trio made up of sisters Dany, Pau and Ale Villarreal, and they've become one of the best discoveries I've made since deliberately stepping outside my blues comfort zone. I first came across Dany Villarreal's guitar playing while researching female guitarists. Then PRS announced the Dany Villarreal signature PRS Astryx guitar, I fell for it completely, and I went looking for the band behind it. That's when this stopped being a video about a guitarist and became something much bigger. After more than 25 years of playing guitar and listening primarily to blues and blues-rock, I've been making a conscious effort to discover modern guitarists, rock bands and musicians I'd previously missed. The Warning might be my favourite discovery so far. Two weeks of research into Dany Villarreal and The Warning uncovered a story I genuinely wasn't expecting. Three sisters from Monterrey, Mexico. A basement, a whiteboard and a video game. A Metallica Enter Sandman cover seen by millions. Record deals turned down while they were still in school. An album funded by 180 strangers and organised by a firefighter from Texas. Guitars handed to Dany by Lzzy Hale, Matt Bellamy and Orianthi. And an eight-year-old girl in Boston with a cardboard box. This is the story of The Warning, Dany Villarreal, Pau Villarreal and Ale Villarreal — how three sisters went from learning music as children to becoming one of the most exciting modern rock bands I've discovered. And perhaps more importantly, it's the story of the people who helped them get there — including the incredible community surrounding them, The Warning Army (TWA). INSIDE THE STORY → The viral 2014 Enter Sandman performance that changed everything → How Dany, Pau and Ale discovered rock music through Rock Band → Why The Warning turned down record deals while still in school → The crowdfunding campaign that helped change their lives → Dany Villarreal's guitar journey and new PRS signature guitar → Lzzy Hale, Matt Bellamy and Orianthi → The incredible story of Boston, 2023 → The Warning Army and the relationship between this band and its fans I've only scratched the surface of The Warning's story, and there's easily a Part 2 here. If you're part of TWA, tell me what I should discover next about Dany, Pau and Ale. I read every comment, and some of the best things I've discovered on this channel have come directly from viewers. And if you're on your own music-discovery journey, tell me which guitarist or band you've been obsessing over lately.
