Our second European caravan stop took us to the beautiful Camping du Château de Leychoiser, near Limoges in the heart of the French countryside. Set in the grounds of a stunning historic château and surrounded by lush woodland, rolling countryside and numerous lakes, it was a wonderfully peaceful place to stop and enjoy the slower pace of French life.
Visiting the Village Martyr of Oradour-sur-Glane is a deeply moving and sombre experience. The preserved ruins stand as a lasting reminder of the massacre that took place on 10 June 1944, when 643 people were killed by Nazi forces. Walking through the abandoned streets, past the remains of homes, shops and the church, gives a powerful sense of the lives that were destroyed. It is a place of remembrance, reflection and a reminder of the terrible consequences of war.
We spent our time exploring the area on our bikes, discovering quiet country lanes, woodland tracks and little hidden corners along the way. One of our rides took us through the woods where we stumbled across an old, abandoned shack, tucked away amongst the trees — one of those unexpected discoveries that makes cycling and exploring somewhere new so much fun.
We also took the drone up into the sky, giving us an incredible bird’s-eye view of the château, the campsite and the beautiful landscape surrounding it. From above, you could really appreciate just how many lakes and waterways are scattered around the château and the surrounding countryside.
A cycle ride into the nearby village gave us another memorable experience. The village was alive with a local festival, with the streets filled with atmosphere and some wonderfully talented local villagers putting on performances for the townspeople. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience a genuine slice of local French life, with the community coming together to celebrate, entertain and enjoy the day.
With the magnificent château as our backdrop, beautiful lakes and countryside all around us, cycling adventures, unexpected woodland discoveries and a lively village festival, this stop gave us everything we love about travelling by caravan freedom to explore, beautiful places to discover and unforgettable experiences along the way.
Our second European caravan stop was certainly one to remember.
